End Of Year Events
A time for employers to remember their obligations.
The festive season has arrived, and many businesses are preparing to celebrate the end of year with a Christmas party.
Given that this may be the first celebration since the pandemic it’s timely for employers to remember their obligations.
Alcohol combined with a relaxed and celebratory environment increases the likelihood of behaviour that is not in line with workplace expectations.
Employers should be mindful that the safety and wellbeing of their employees should be of upmost importance.
In preparation for an event the following can be used as a checklist:
- A policy covering employee behaviour at social functions should be in place and the employees should be briefed on it before the event
- Consider the appropriateness and safety of the venue
- Check that the venue ensures safe service of alcohol
- Ensure there will be enough food – this is especially important when there is free flowing alcohol
- Ensure that at least one senior staff member does not consume alcohol and monitors employee consumption of alcohol and behaviour at the event. This person should have sufficient authority to be able to deal with issues that may occur in real time
- Consider employees have safe transport home
- Conduct a post function review to ensure that the event met the needs of the business`s planning. If any complaints are received, they should be taken seriously and properly investigated.
